OK with that out the way lets start!<\/p>\n<p><em>What you will need:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(1) A Jailbreaking device &#8211; I suggest E3 Card Reader as it worked for me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-623\" title=\"E3 Card Reader\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/E3-Card-Reader.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"244\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(2) A USB Flash Disk that is at least 256Mb<\/p>\n<p>(3) USB Cable for your remote control<\/p>\n<p>(4) Time (about 1 hour after getting the files) and Patience<\/p>\n<p><em>The process I used was:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(1) to UPgrade from version 3.10 to version 3.41 (kiosk) firmware \u00a0(you cannot load the normal firmware on Kiosk models).<\/p>\n<p>(2) jailbreak the PS3 with the E3 Card Reader and then &#8220;DOWNgrade&#8221; the firmware to the retail 3.41 firmware<\/p>\n<p>Optional steps that I then did&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(3) UPgrade to Sony 3.55 normal firmware<\/p>\n<p>(4) UPgrade to version 3.55 custom firmware &#8211; to allow backup managers and homebrew.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Lets Get Started&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On powering up the PS3 Demo\/Kiosk unit this is what greets you \u00a0(<em>please excuse the reflection of the lights on the screen<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-433\" href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?attachment_id=433\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-433\" title=\"ps3demo-1\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-1.jpeg 640w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you try and do something on it you are shown this message:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-434\" href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?attachment_id=434\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-434\" title=\"ps3demo-2\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-2.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see I am sitting on version 3.10 of the firmware. \u00a0With Sony releasing firmware that removed OtherOS functionality I decided to stick it out \u00a0and see how long hackers would take to bring it back&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-435\" href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?attachment_id=435\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-435\" title=\"ps3demo-3\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/ps3demo-3.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Step 1 &#8211; Upgrade to 3.41 KIOSK Firmware<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After spending quite some time doing searches for Kiosk firmware for the PS3 I eventually found \u00a0it, to make it easier on you I have placed it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scanlen.com\/PS3\/FW\/Kiosk\/KIOSK341\/PS3UPDAT.PUP\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for you to download. \u00a0Please note it is 170Mb.<\/p>\n<p>Get a USB Flash drive and format it FAT32 (click <a href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?p=111\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for a HOWTO if you have a large capacity drive).<\/p>\n<p>Have a look <a href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?p=367\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a>at how the folder structure should be for the PS3 to recognize the USB drive correctly.<\/p>\n<p>You must create a folder in the root of the flash drive called \u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>PS3<\/strong><\/span>. Create a subfolder called <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">UPDATE<\/span><\/strong>. Place the KIOSK firmware update file <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>PS3UPDAT.PUP<\/strong><\/span> into this folder (DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME)<\/p>\n<p>Go to the <em>SYSTEM<\/em> tab of the XMB and then up to <em>SYSTEM UPDATE<\/em>. \u00a0Insert your USB flash drive into the PS3 and then select FROM EXTERNAL MEDIA.<\/p>\n<p>It will show you the following:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-618\" title=\"ps3demo-4\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-4-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-4.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Follow the prompts and upgrade to 3.41 (Promotion)<\/p>\n<p>Once done your PS3 will show that it is upgraded to version 3.41:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-616\" title=\"ps3demo-5\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-5.jpeg 640w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-5-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/> See the mode in the bottom right corner&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Step 2 &#8211; DOWNgrade to 3.41 Retail Firmware<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK lets start by watching the following clip from ChrisTechTV &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sQFBPpDxjVw\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sQFBPpDxjVw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While you waiting for YouTube to cache, download the &#8220;<strong>E3 Card Reader &#8211; PS3.rar<\/strong>&#8221; file, either from  or from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scanlen.com\/PS3\/E3\/E3%20Card%20Reader%20-%20PS3.rar\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> it is 170Mb.<\/p>\n<p>OK, YouTube should be done, watch the whole video thru first so you understand what is to be done. Once done lets go to certain sections in the clip, fast forward to:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2min3<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>0<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">till<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> 5min50<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Here Chris shows you what files to copy where on the USB flash drive and E3 card reader, do it.<\/p>\n<p>You now need to put your PS3 into non-Auto Start mode. To do this:<\/p>\n<p>(1) Have a disc in the drive &#8211; any game will do<br \/>\n(2) Turn off the power switch at the back of the machine<br \/>\n(3) Turn it back on at the switch until you see the Blu-Ray light flash one or two times (that is the BLUE light)<br \/>\n(4) Turn it off at the power switch at the back again<br \/>\n(5) Turn it on again at the power switch at the back, the machine should not automatically switch on, but instead only show the RED standby light in front.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>5min50<\/strong> till <strong>7min00<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; Here Chris shows you how to put the PS3 into Factory service mode. Only problem is that Kiosk models do not show the big <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RED<\/span> box as his screen shows.<\/p>\n<p>So what you gonna do is insert your E3 (place it in the most left USB port if you are facing the machine and it is lying down) into the PS3. Power on the machine and immediately press the EJECT and POWER button as what he does in the video. If you have done it right then you will see that the E3 lights turn from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RED<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">BLUE<\/span>. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Blue<\/span> is GOOD.\u00a0The console will panic and shut down the first time. When you turn it back on your controller should desync and the resolution will be super low. You are now in Factory Service Mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-619\" title=\"ps3demo-e3\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-e3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-e3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ps3demo-e3.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>OK now first unlock the PS3 menu &#8211; on the XMB go to <em>System, <\/em>highlight <em>Security Settings<\/em>, hold the [L1] + [Select] + \u00a0[R1] + [SQUARE] buttons. Enter the passcode (<a href=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/?p=419\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> is a reminder of what it is). Now shut the PS3 down from the menu as Chris does and remove the E3.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>7min00<\/strong> till <strong>08m45<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; This is the actual converting to retail firmware process.<\/p>\n<p>Power on the PS3 with the normal flash drive in the most RIGHT USB port of the PS3 and press the Power On button.<\/p>\n<p>You are going to see a black screen and your memory card light is going flicker for roughly 6-10 minutes until the process is done. The console will shut down on its own when it finishes, so don&#8217;t mess with it until it&#8217;s done.<\/p>\n<p>When the console finishes doing its thing, power it back on and it will be in red box (service) mode.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>08m45<\/strong> till <strong>11min40<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; This process takes the PS3 out of Factory Service mode.<\/p>\n<p>Copy the files like he states, then insert the flash disk into the most RIGHT USB port again and power on the PS3. The screen will stay black and the PS3 will power off automatically after about 30 seconds. \u00a0You can remove your flash disk and normally power up your PS3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Congrads! \u00a0You now have a NORMAL retail PS3 instead of the demo\/kiosk unit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next steps are totally optional, I however wanted to do this as I wanted to play around with Custom Firmware (CFW) and Backup Managers &#8211; that is a post for another time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Step 3 &#8211; UPgrade to 3.55 Retail Firmware<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Download from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scanlen.com\/PS3\/FW\/Official\/PS3UPDAT.PUP\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> the Sony official 3.55 firmware and copy it to the PS3\\UPDATE folder of your flash disk. \u00a0Go to the <em>System<\/em> tab of the XMB and then up to the <em>System Update<\/em> option. Select from <em>Removable Disk<\/em> and then follow the update process.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Step 4 &#8211; UPgrade to 3.55 CUSTOM Firmware<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I settled on &#8220;<em>kmeaw 3.55 Custom Firmware \u2013 LV2 Patches with Peek\/Poke Included<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0 you can download it from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ps3-hacks.com\/file\/267\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scanlen.com\/PS3\/FW\/Custom\/355_KMEAW\/PS3UPDAT.PUP\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0It was the most stable one that was available at the time that I did the Kiosk to Retail conversion.<\/p>\n<p>Now you can copy the PS3UPDAT.PUP file to the flash disk as you would normally to update the PS3, however as you already have 3.55 official firmware already installed the console will not all you to update it again&#8230;so you need to put the PS3 into the Recovery Mode.<\/p>\n<p>To do this you need to:<\/p>\n<p>1. Turn off PS3.<br \/>\n2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.<br \/>\n3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps<br \/>\n4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.<br \/>\n5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button<br \/>\n6. The Recovery menu will pop up.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-620\" title=\"PS3-recoverymenu\" src=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PS3-recoverymenu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PS3-recoverymenu.jpg 425w, http:\/\/outofmymind.scanlen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/PS3-recoverymenu-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert your USB flash disk with the custom firmware on and then select <strong>6. System Update<\/strong> from the menu and follow the steps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Congrads!
