Android Apps – My 10 Must Haves

My friend Timon asked me what Android apps I can recommend for his soon to arrive HTC Desire Z.

That got me thinking, if I had to get a new Android phone, what apps would I definitely load from the start?  Here is my list (and I reserve the right to change it any time) 🙂 of apps that I enjoy using on almost a daily basis.

PS: I have provided links to AppBrain’s website, which is an alternative to the Android Market.  If you search the Market just make sure the icon you see here matches up with the one in the Market before just downloading…

10. TuneIn Radio

This app allows you to stream your favourite radio stations, either via WiFi (watch that cap if you are on a capped plan) or 3G (if you REALLY need to listen to the radio).  It features 1000’s of radios stations from both South Africa (5fm, JacarandaFM, Highveld Stereo, SAfm) and international (I like 181.FM The Office). The app can also be setup to act like a clock radio so you can wake up to streaming music.

9. SMSBackup

Don’t you wish you had a backup of your SMS messages that you sent or recieved?  Well now you can! Use your GMail account to backup your SMS to. A label will automatically be added to the messages so you can filter when accessing GMail. And it backs up automatically. One of those true install and forget about apps.

8. Amazon Kindle

I saw how cool a Kindle E-Book reader was at one of the functions I attended; and when I browsed the Amazon website I saw that they had clients for Android, PC, Mac, iPad and iPhone. I downloaded it and have since purchased 3 books from the Kindle store and until purchasing a real Kindle E-Book reader gets higher up on my priority list, this will have to do.

7. PasswordCard

I did a blog post about this concept of making passwords more secure and easy to remember/reference to.  Have a look here on how this app can free up some memory brain cells.

6. Dilbert

I dig Dilbert. There are some days cartoon that I swear he works/worked for the firm that I do.  This app is the official app and allows booking of those favorite ones.

5. Gauge Battery Widget

Seriously how is one to accurately see just how much battery there is left looking at that funny icon next to the time?  With this app you can display how much is left using different types of gauges and you can even place an icon showing value of battery in numbers next to the standard Android battery icon.

4. Quick Settings

This app allows turning features on and off EASILY from a central place.  Want bluetooth on or off? Want to disconnect from the internet? Want to set phone to vibrate AND play ringtone on incoming calls? No Problem.  One of those apps that just keep getting better with each new release.

3. 3G Watchdog

Unless you have an unlimited 3G plan you need this app. You can setup how much data you want to spend for a period of time and this app monitors your 3G connection and keeps a log of it. As you near your limit it warns you – so no more nasty 3G bill surprises!  If there is one app on this list that you MUST get it is this one.

2. OnTrack Diabetes

Another app that I blogged about.  If you are a diabetic this will help in keeping track of your disease. Read the blog post here.

1. Google Reader

On the iPod Touch I use a brilliant free app called Feedler. Unfortunately the Android newsfeed readers that I tried out just could not compare to Feedler – in my opinion. So when Google released the Android app for Google Reader I was blown away.  It is fast, syncs with my Google Reader online account (so marks them read online if I read the articles on the phone) and very easy to use.

So this is my list, tell me what are your favorite Android apps?

LighterSide: Nerd Friends Are Powerless

Here is something to brighten up the day…

From Geeks Are Sexy blog source:

Eish! Lightning Strike

From the Eish! Department This folks is what lightning does to computer chips when it gets hold of it…

This is in fact the network card controller chip that is on my motherboard.

The wife and I were sitting in the lounge listening to the soft rain in the back ground when all of a sudden…

CRACK!

I jumped up from the chair (partly because of fright) to see what the lightning had struck.  On entering my study I saw that my Ubuntu PC was rebooting…phew at least it was still “working”.

A quick glance at my ADSL router at it seemed to “look” alright.

My network switch however – DLink DES-1008D – was not in such a good shape.  Unplugging the network cable left the Connection light still shining. I unplugged the power and then tried again…same symptoms…sigh…

Now to check the PC more throughly. No network connectity from the onboard network card… On opening the box I noticed that the controller chip featured above had blown. The rest “seemed” fine…A quick scratch thru my “parts bin” and I found an old Intel 100Mbps PCI network card that I put into the machine to restore network connectivity – can’t be without internet for to long…

Amazingly it seems that lightning had struck the Telkom line, entered the ADSL modem/router, passed straight thru (without damaging it), hit my DLink switch (blew it) and then took out the onboard network card.  Thankfully nothing else was plugged into the network at that time, and the Playstations were on wireless…

Time to contact the insurance company and find out it they will cover it… At least the damages were not as bad as what they could have been…Eish!

PS3 – Folder Structure for External Media

OK so you have hard drive (or USB flash) formatted with FAT32 that you want to plug into your PS3, but the Music does not show up on the XMB under Music, neither do the Photos or Music…

So just how is the PS3 expecting the folder structure to be setup?

Found this great article over at  PS3Explained.com giving the breakdown of what will work.

Cracking the Credit Card Code

Have you ever wondered how the banks or financial service providers determine the numbers on your credit card? Contrary to what you may think, they aren’t random. Those 16 digits are there for a reason and, knowing a few simple rules, you could actually learn a lot about a credit card just from its number. This infographic from mint.com shows you how to crack that code.

When you need to watch that TV Episode…

The hero is trapped. The bad dude is about to make his move and then suddenly up pop those dreaded words “TO BE CONTINUED…

If you a TV addict like me, you will know what I mean when I say that sometimes you just HAVE to see that next episode…

Well if you have a 4Mbps UNcapped ADSL line then you may be in luck.  Point your media centre PC, PS3 or PC browser to the following link and be prepared to be amazed…

http://tv.blinkx.com

Now I am not going to get into the legality of streaming or accessing TV series that have already shown overseas but not locally.  That is not my place to discuss and it is to heavy a debate to get into right now.

This website allows you to stream TV episodes via your browser. Free.  OK, OK… “Free”. If you have uncapped ADSL it won’t really matter on how much you streaming. “Free” is you don’t mind being limited to 70 minutes of streaming and then waiting 2 hours for another free slot.

It is VERY easy.

  1. Search for your TV series by name.
  2. Click on the Season.
  3. Click on the Episode you want to watch.
  4. A list should open showing all the available hosts of the episode, click on one of them
  5. Click on the big red CONTINUE button
  6. If you have chosen the MegaVideo host a window will display a big RED play button, click this.
  7. The red button will turn green, click this and then
  8. Sit back and enjoy with your favourite popcorn or snack.

Have a look at what is available. If that is not enough motivation to get that uncapped ADSL line then I don’t know  🙂

Please excuse me now, the show is about to start…
