Recycle your motherboard box

Asus recently had an interesting concept. They re-purposed the box that the motherboard comes in to also function as a computer case.

ITWorld has the write up (found here):

In the quest to cut down on shipping waste Taiwan’s Asus has a novel idea: What if the shipping container became the PC case?

That’s the idea behind a box the company will begin using from June to ship one of its Mini ATX motherboards. It holds the motherboard snug for shipping and is constructed so additional components required to make a PC can be added, said Debby Lee, a spokeswoman for the Taipei-based company.

An example of the box is on show at this week’s Cebit trade show in Hanover, Germany.

There are punch-out holes for ventilation and a real panel that houses the PC’s connectors and interfaces.

Asus said the box is intended to allow PC enthusiasts to get their new computers up and running quickly while they search for the perfect case.

“Some people spend a long time looking for a case, so this box is all they need until they find something,” said Lee.

Asus gives it a lifetime of at least a year.

Here is the video taken at the show of the box:

MaximumPC had an article in 2007 where the task was to build a PC for as little as possible ($500). One of their staff used a cardboard box as a case, although I am sure you will agree that it is a lot less elegant than the Asus offering…

Upgrading from DOS all the way to Windows 7

If you have been around computers for a while now you may still remember DOS and Windows 3.1(1). Maybe your first computer came with Windows 95, or even Windows 98. Maybe you skipped a generation and was first introduced to Windows 2000 or XP. Well regardless I doubt there is anyone on the planet that has not worked on at least one version of Microsoft Windows on a PC…

The dude from Andy’s Tech Experiments did an interesting exercise, and recorded it for all to enjoy!

He took a Virtual Machine and setup DOS and Windows 1 on it, then proceeded to upgrade all the way up to Windows 7.  He skipped Windows ME, but then even Microsoft would rather forget that one…

Have a look at this YouTube video and enjoy the blast from the past…btw Monkey Island and Doom also make appearances  🙂

Check out his blog for more information on how he got it right –  http://rasteri.blogspot.com/2011/03/chain-of-fools-upgrading-through-every.html

Brainier Rubik’s Cube

Artist Jason Freeny – of MoistProduction.com –  likes to let people get an inside look of things…sometimes more inside than what people are comfortable with…

He has taken things like Mario (of Super Mario Bros fame), Lego Man (you know those guys with the yellow cylindrical heads) and Hello Kitty and peeled away the layers to reveal what they are actually like inside…

Now he is proud to introduce a new spin on the classic Rubik’s Cube…

Brain power is NOT an optional extra to help complete it successfully…

Check out his site for more interesting goodies…

Meet Sally from Naked Password

I have already posted on how to create a PasswordCard, so when I saw a method (via Unplggd) on how to encourage people to create a more strong password when registering on a website I had to take a peek.

Also the fact that the name makes most people say “huh?” was also another reason 🙂

Meet Sally from Naked Password

Like the website says about the sexy 8-bit pixelated Sally:

The whole idea of naked password is to encourage your users to enter stronger passwords.
Our beautiful model Sally tastefully removes items of clothing as the password grows stronger.

So head on over to their site and try out your passwords to see if Sally thinks they are really as strong as what you think they are 🙂

A Day Made Of Glass – by Corning

Corning is a company that not everyone may know about by name, but chances are you may have already used their technology recently.  Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the iPhone 4 and other gadgets have glass that has been specially treated to be extremely strong. This type of glass is called Gorilla Glass. Guess who makes Gorilla Glass – yes Corning!

Well I stumbled on a video made by Corning (via 2modern blog) giving us  a glimpse  into the possible not so distant future…

Have a peak here…

Personally I would really like a future like this…

Electronic Kitchen Counter Tops:

Electronic Display Bathroom Mirrors:

Customizable Car Dashboard:

Now I wonder if all this will be running on Android, IOS or Windows… only time will tell…
